Heartland Weather Conditions that Threaten Your Gutters

Thunderstorm Clouds Over Suburban Houses - K-Guard Heartland

We love calling the Heartland home. We have some pretty amazing professional sports teamslet’s go, Chiefs and Royals plenty of outdoor activities, and great shopping. Our region is absolutely beautiful with a variety of trees, lakes, and rolling hills. While it’s a wonderful place to call home, the Heartland does get some extreme weather.

It’s great that we get to experience four seasons with rich, gorgeous fall foliage and even some snow in the winter months. The weather can often be unpredictable with the chance for severe storms most days in the spring and summer months. The elements can take a toll on the exterior of your home, especially your gutters. Continue reading to learn about Heartland weather conditions that threaten your gutters as well as a solution.

Rainy Season

Although rainfall occurs year-round, the Heartland’s rainy season typically runs from May-August with May bringing the most rainfall. In addition to the rainy season, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Kansas City region will see more rainfall than usual this summer.

While rainfall can be great for our lawns and gardens, too much rainfall can lead to damage. Traditional half-round gutter systems, gutters with screens/filters, and even other “complete” gutter systems have a hard time keeping up with all the rainfall we receive here in the Heartland. These gutter systems can see damage like overflowing and sagging gutters, standing water inside the gutters, gutters tearing away from the home among other things.

Hail

Another weather condition that can threaten your gutter system: Hail. Occurring most often in the spring and summer months, hail can occur any time there’s a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms produce hard, round frozen balls of ice that fall from thunderstorm clouds when they can no longer support their weight.

When these hard frozen hailstones fall from the sky they ultimately land around or on our homes or vehicles, causing significant damage. Most gutter systems can develop dents and split seams, resulting in costly repairs. Most vinyl and aluminum gutter systems get chips in the paint from hailstones. If the hailstone is heavy enough it can loosen the bolts and screws the gutter is mounted with, causing the gutter system to tear away from the home. Although hail occurs most often in the spring and summer months, it can happen any time of year. Kansas and Missouri rank in the top 10 states that receive the most hail, so homeowners in the Heartland need to ensure their gutter systems can withstand hailstones.

Wind

Did you know that Kansas City ranks as one of the windiest cities in America, surpassing Chicago by 0.3 mph. While it’s nice to have a breeze in the humid summer months, our wind gusts can be pretty extreme wind speeds that can reach 65 mph, causing damage to our homes. High wind speeds often coincide with severe weather which as we all know occurs often in the spring and summer months.

When wind gusts surpass 30 mph then a wind advisory is issued. High wind speeds can rip shingles off of roofs, blow over large trees, and damage our gutter systems. Traditional half-round gutter systems have seams with each section mounted with bolts, screws, and many different parts. When extreme wind occurs it can loosen these parts causing the seams to split, resulting in leaking gutters. High wind speeds can also tear the gutters from the home possibly ruining the home’s soffit and fascia boards and even the roof depending on how the gutter system was mounted.

Every local knows that weather in the Heartland is often unpredictable, however, some weather conditions threaten our gutter systems more than others. If you have a traditional half-round gutter system then it may be at risk for severe damage from these weather conditions.
