How Improper Installation of Gutters Could Lead to Costly Damage

We do things differently at K-Guard especially when it comes to gutter installation versus other gutter options.  The post below summarizes why that is critical when it comes to home maintenance.

Where is the Floodplain for my Gutter?

Think of a traditional gutter that is overflowing with water.  That “top” is essentially the plain where water will discharge in the event the gutter becomes clogged.  K-Guard is installed above the floodplain which eliminates the possibility of gutter separation from the fascia board and soffit.  You can see a video demonstration of this here in section comparing K-Guard vs. Traditional Gutters.

Meanwhile, other companies continue to install them in the area under the flood plain that comprises the exposed siding and wood. Respectively, these are called the soffit and fascia.  Why is this important?  Read on….

Installing Above the Floodplain Reduces Chances for Wood Rot

When gutters or downspouts get clogged they begin to overflow. In addition, storms or other windy conditions cause the stored water to splash against the soffit and fascia. These are not protected in other gutter systems, so the wood begins to soften and rot.

At this point, water seeps through the rotted area into the home itself. In turn, it puts interior areas at risk for water damage if the moisture reaches unprotected areas.

Avoid Separation and Collapse

As the fascia continues to rot it begins to destabilize the gutter hangers. If these come completely loose it results in the collapse of the gutter. This brings down the fascia, siding, and in the end it leads to some large repair bills.

Hard to Reach

Gutters at this height are difficult to reach for maintenance and cleaning. So, either the homeowner hires a contractor to do the job or ignores the issues. The costs are high in either situation.  Gutters need to be cleaned 3-6 times a year depending on the number of trees on your property. On average, each cleaning can cost $135 or more.

Most Debris Accumulation

At soffit/fascia height is where the greatest accumulation of debris occurs. Whirlybirds, acorns, and other detritus fall from the roofline as well as the sky. And the place they end their journey are the gutters.

How to Avoid These Pitfalls

If you’re set on keeping the existing gutters, here’s how to avoid these issues.

  • Check the soffit and fascia for any damage, and repair them as soon as possible
  • Clean the gutters and downspout.
  • Cover the gutters with a shield to reduce the risk of clogs
  • Consider setups that allow 4×3-inch downspouts instead of the standard 2×3-inch. This helps to move more water and debris through the system.
